Program
DAY 1: SATURDAY
The centrally located Hotel Rathaus Wein & Design**** awaits you in Vienna (2 overnight stays), where an historical structure is combined with modern design. Your travel guides look forward to meeting you for an appetiser at 6pm at the hotel bar. You will then have the rest of the evening to your own disposal.
DAY 2: SUNDAY Round trip Vienna (18 km)
Numerous cycle paths make the Danube metropolis ideal for exploring by bike. During a guided tour, we will discover the beauties of the imperial city and will begin with the famous Ringstraße, with its rows of splendid buildings. The State Opera, Parliament, Burgtheater, City Hall and the Hofburg are only the most magnificent examples of this architectural pearl necklace. We will then cycle along the Kärntnerstraße to the Stephansdom cathedral and into the old city. After lunch, it is possible to take a ride on the famous big wheel (on your own). We will arrive back at our Hotel Rathaus Wein & Design****. in the early afternoon. There is still enough time to do some more sightseeing in the city. We will enjoy dinner in one of the known restaurants.
DAY 3: MONDAY Vienna – Rust (53 km)
In the morning, we will mount our bikes and cycle out of the city. We will travel through the Prater and will soon reach the Danube Island. On this artificial island, we will travel a small section down the Danube, before crossing the river completely and subsequently arriving at the national park Donau-Auen. The area is populated by beavers, sea eagles, grey heron and little ringed plovers. The kingfisher, the landmark of the national park, also resides here. In the lower Austrian community of Eckartsau, we can pay a visit to its eponymous castle, and can take a tour of the magnificent country estate and the hunting castle. We will then travel by bus to Rust, to the Seehotel Rust****, situated directly at the lake (3 overnight stays). We will enjoy dinner in the hotel’s popular restaurant.
DAY 4: TUESDAY Rust – Eisenstadt – Rust (42 km)
We will leave Rust and cycle to Eisenstadt. Here we will take the time for the Burgenland capital city, known as the Haydn-city, and will visit the castle of the famous Esterházy family. You will then be invited to a pleasant restaurant for lunch, before we travel by bike back to our lovely hotel in Rust. As today’s lunch is included in your travel price, you will have the evening to your own disposal. There is enough time to have a refreshing swim in the lake, to make use of the hotel’s own wellness area and to stroll through the lovely small town. There is hardly a chimney here without a storks nest, wine culture is omnipresent and numerous restaurants invite one to linger.
DAY 5: WEDNESDAY tour trip Lake Neusiedl (24 km)
We will travel by ferry and will arrive at the eastern lake shore in the morning. Here we will explore the National Park Neusiedler See-Seewinkel by bike, a paradise for ornithologists and those interested in plants. Here, together with a local guide, we will get to know several of the approx. 340 types of birds who live here and numerous other beauties of this unique ecosystem. Afterwards, we will travel by ship to Mörbisch, from where it is only a few kilometres to our Seehotel Rust**** and a refreshing swim in the lake. The winery Feiler-Artinger, one of the top wineries in the region, awaits us in the evening. We will taste the special quality wines, which are grown on the best slopes here. Not only the excellent white and red wines, but also some of the Trockenbeerenauslese have acquired the highest international reputation. Afterwards, we will meet up in an excellent restaurant for dinner.
DAY 6: THURSDAY Rust – Baden at Vienna (49 km)
In the morning, we will leave Rust and cycle southwards in charming shore landscape. We will pass Mörbisch and then travel over the Hungarian border. We will soon reach Sopron, which has preserved an historic city scape worth seeing. After an in-depth tour and enough time to stroll through the picturesque alleys, we will travel a short trip by train back to Austria. From Wiener Neustadt, the birth city of the Emperor Maximilian, with its late Romanesque cathedral, we will travel on the Thermen cycle path in the direction of Baden. We will be welcomed by the Hotel Herzoghof****, in the imperial spa city, an art nouveau building opposite the lovely Baden spa gardens (2 overnight stays).
DAY 7: FRIDAY Round trip Baden (26 km)
The Biedermeier city Baden is pleasantly located at the foothills of the southern Vienna woods. After some pleasant cycling, we will load up our bicycles and take a walk on a pilgrimage path to the idyllically situated Cistercian monastery Heiligenkreuz, and will visit the abbey which dates back to the 12th century. Our cycle path then leads slightly downwards through the Helenental valley back to Baden, where we will be welcomed by the Hotel Herzoghof**** once again. There will be enough time to relax in one’s room, or to explore the appealing spa city. The famous Casino in Baden is a sight worth seeing as well as the lovely Römertherme (thermal baths) and the thermal lido. It is certainly no coincidence, that Ludwig van Beethoven completed his Symphony No. 9 “Ode to Joy” here. We will enjoy the evening in a well-known restaurant.
DAY 8: SATURDAY Baden – Vienna
In the morning, we will take the time for a hearty breakfast. We will then walk together to the train station and will board the Badner train to Vienna. There are only a few metres from our stop to our starting hotel Rathaus Wein & Design****. Our journey ends here around midday. One can also stop at the Wien Meidling train station with the Badner train as an alternative. International railway traffic operates from here.
