Program
DAY 1: SATURDAY
In Innsbruck, you are awaited by the pleasant Hotel Maximilian Stadthaus Penz**** located at the border of the historic old town. We will meet up at 5pm in the hotel lobby and an expert guide will take us on a tour of the heart of the Alps with its famous Goldenen Dachl (golde roof), the old town and the imposing Hofburg. You will then have the evening to your own disposal.
DAY 2: SUNDAY Innsbruck – Meran (49 km)
In the morning, we will leave Innsbruck by bus and will then reach the Reschen pass. We begin our cycling journey where the church tower of the little sunken village of Graun arises out of the Reschen Lake. With the Ortler Mountains and their snow-covered peaks in view, we will travel via the former Römerstraße (Roman road) Via Claudia Augusta to Glurns, the smallest town in southern Tyrol. In the afternoon, we will travel a short distance on the Vinschger train, which was completely restored in 2005 and put back into operation. Back on our bikes, we will discover Meran from afar, probably the most beautiful city in southern Tyrol. The outstanding City Hotel Meran**** awaits us in the spa city (two overnight stays). We will end our cycling day over an enjoyable dinner together.
DAY 3: MONDAY Meran – Passeier – Meran (25 km)
In the morning we will be taken on a tour of the floridity of the botanic gardens of the Trauttmansdorff Castle, a unique garden world of 12 hectares boasting a host of plants from different origins. We will then travel a short distance by bus into the lovely Passeier valley, to the north of Meran. The Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer was born here, a man who taught Napoleon’s troops the meaning of fear many a time. The Passeier valley, surrounded by the Stubaier, Ötztaler and Sarntaler Alps, is a popular destination for nature lovers. We will continue to follow the cycle path along the Passer, and travel southwards on our bikes. Lush meadows alternate with meadow landscapes. We will arrive back at the lovely spa city Meran in the late afternoon. We will enjoy our dinner together.
DAY 4: TUESDAY Meran – Bozen (40 km)
We will leave Meran by bike and will soon arrive at Lana, where we will visit the famous Schnatterpeck Altar. This monumental late gothic carving is considered to be the largest winged altar in the whole Alpine region. Magnificent estates, proud castles and bustling wine villages subsequently line our cycle route. We will travel between extensive fruit meadows and vineyards throughout the day. Enough reason to visit one of the many wine farms in southern Tyrol and to enjoy a delicious wine. We will then cycle further on to Bozen, the capital city of southern Tyrol. Here, in the heart of the old city, the Parkhotel Laurin awaits us, the best hotel in the city, which has a large park and a pool, inviting you to relax. A lovely restaurant awaits us for dinner.
DAY 5: WEDNESDAY Bozen – Trient (34 km)
We will leave awakening Bozen along the Eisack River, before our route gains several metres in height on a cycle path developed from a former railway line, to St. Michael (it is possible to bridge this ascent by bus). Enchanting views of magnificent castles and palaces are opened up time and again, embedded in a charming landscape. Our route then leads further to the large Montiggler Lake as well as Lake Kaltern. In the late afternoon, we will travel by train from a small train station to Trento, in order to avoid a less spectacular route. In Trento, we will be welcomed by the Grand Hotel Trento**** (3 overnight stays), directly in front of the gates of the medieval old city. Trento is a real gem, that most travellers unfortunately skate around on their way southwards. We will end our cycling day with a typical Italian dish – with pizza.
DAY 6: THURSDAY Trient – Val Sugana - Trient (46 km)
In the morning, we will travel by train into the Val Sugana valley. Small places such as Borgo Valsugana, directly located at the Brenta River and known for its arcades, accompanies our cycling route today. Alcide de Gasperi, who made a definite impact on the post-war period in Italy and in Europe, lived in this small town for many years. We continue to follow the lovely Brenta cycle path, past small vineyards and apple plantations up to the Caldonazzo Lake. There will also be enough time to enjoy a swim, before we follow the southern lake shore up to its end. From there, we will travel by train once again, in order to avoid a busy road. As lunch is included in the travel price tomorrow, you will have this evening to your own disposal.
DAY 7: FRIDAY Trento - Lake Garda - Trento (44 km)
After a short transfer, we will mount our bicycles in the small town of Cadine, and cycle into the Sarca valley. Travelling on splendid cycle paths, we will pass several lakes, can admire the spectacular rock faces which surround the valley, and can enjoy the Mediterranean flora. Following the Sarca River, we will reach Arco in the late morning with its picturesque old town and the medieval castle above the town. From here, we will not have to travel far to reach our stage destination, Torbole am Gardasee. We will first enjoy lunch together before there is time to either enjoy a swim in Lake Garda or to take a walk along the shore promenade. We will then travel by bus back to Trento, where we will enjoy our closing dinner, and can review the events of our cycling trip.
DAY 8: SATURDAY Trento
After breakfast, we will take part on a city round tour with a local guide. The historic centre with its medieval buildings reflects the wealth and the importance of the powerful bishops as well as of its citizens, who came to prosperity through trade. Our journey ends around noon at our hotel. From Trento, there are connections to local and long-distance transport.
